Is cabergoline enough for high prolactin?

Cabergoline is generally the first-choice medication for raised prolactin, including where a prolactinoma is present. It lowers prolactin levels effectively in most people, shrinks the tumour where there is one, and is usually better tolerated than the older alternative, bromocriptine. Whether it is "enough" depends on what you are treating and why. If the goal is restoring periods and fertility, cabergoline alone is often sufficient — ovulation frequently returns once prolactin normalises. If there is a larger pituitary tumour affecting vision, additional management may be needed. It also depends on the cause. If your raised prolactin is driven by a medication you are taking, by untreated hypothyroidism, or was a one-off result from a stressful blood draw, then cabergoline is treating the wrong thing. That is why the cause should be established before treatment starts — including repeating the test under proper conditions. Monitoring matters: prolactin levels are rechecked periodically, and imaging is repeated where a tumour was found. If you are trying to conceive or become pregnant while taking it, tell your doctor promptly — management changes in pregnancy and should not be adjusted on your own.
