How long does it take to conceive naturally?

Among couples having regular unprotected sex, the large majority conceive within a year — roughly 8 in 10 within 12 months, and most of the remainder within a second year. Most couples who conceive do so within the first six months. Per cycle, a woman under 35 has broadly a one-in-five to one-in-four chance in any given month. That is lower than most people assume, and it is why several months without a pregnancy is common rather than a warning sign. Age is the single strongest factor. The per-cycle chance declines gradually through the thirties and more steeply after 37 or so, because both the number and the chromosomal quality of remaining eggs decrease. Timing helps but matters less than people think. The fertile window is the five days before ovulation plus the day itself. Having sex every one to two days across that window is enough — daily intercourse is not necessary and rigid scheduling often adds stress without adding much benefit.
