How long do NIPT results take?

Typically around one to two weeks from when the sample reaches the laboratory, though this varies between laboratories and by where the sample has to travel. Ask your clinic for their own expected turnaround rather than a general figure, and ask when the sample will actually be dispatched — samples sometimes wait before being sent, which adds to the wait without anyone mentioning it. Results may take longer if the first sample had insufficient placental DNA and a repeat is needed. This is more likely if your BMI is higher or if the sample was taken early in pregnancy. The waiting is genuinely difficult, and it is reasonable to say so. A few things that help: Ask in advance how you will be told — a phone call, a portal, a follow-up appointment — and who to contact if you have heard nothing by the expected date. Ask what happens if the result is high-risk: who will call you, whether you can be seen quickly, and whether counselling is arranged before or after you are told. Decide in advance whether you want to be told by phone or in person. Knowing the process reduces the sense of waiting in the dark, which is usually the hardest part. If you have heard nothing well past the expected date, chase it. Samples and reports do occasionally go astray, and no one will mind you asking.
