How it works
The remaining tube can collect an egg released from either ovary. The tube is not rigidly fixed to the ovary on its own side — the fimbriae, the finger-like ends, are mobile and can retrieve an egg released from the opposite ovary.

What affects your chances
The condition of the remaining tube matters more than the number. A single healthy tube is a considerably better position than two damaged ones.
The cause of the loss. If a tube was removed for ectopic pregnancy in an otherwise healthy pelvis, the outlook is generally better than if both tubes were damaged by infection and one was subsequently removed.
Ovarian function on both sides — since either ovary can supply the egg.
Timeframe
It is reasonable to try for the standard period — 12 months under 35, 6 months at 35 or over — before assessment, unless you already know there is another factor.
Do not wait longer than that on the basis that one tube means it will simply take more time.
What to have checked
The remaining tube. If it has not been assessed, an HSG or similar test is worth doing — particularly if the cause of the original problem was infection or endometriosis, which affect both sides.
Ovulation, and a semen analysis for your partner. Focusing entirely on the tube while a male factor goes uninvestigated is a common pattern.
Ectopic pregnancy risk
If you lost a tube to an ectopic pregnancy, the risk of a further ectopic is increased. Tell your obstetrician early in any pregnancy so an early scan can confirm the location.
Seek urgent care for one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or unusual bleeding in early pregnancy.
If conception does not happen
IVF bypasses the tubes entirely and is effective regardless of tubal status.
The reassurance
One tube is a smaller disadvantage than most people assume. It is not a reason to move straight to IVF, and it is not a reason to assume difficulty.
